Primary flow devices for open channel flow are devices like
a weir, flume, or venturi whose design includes a flow
restriction that produces a known level change at a known
flow rate.

The instrumentation is typically a top mounted, high
accuracy ultrasonic transmitter that measures level behind
the flow element by shooting an ultrasonic beam down at the
flow below it. The transmitter calculates flow based on
design information on the primary flow device.
