Petrol have high volatile so completely mix to covert gases firm at atmosphere temperature. when using diesel in petrol not mix both air and diesel are in different form so even give spark not to burn so not started... In diesel engine using petrol. Fuel pump atomize the petrol when it reach self ignition then burn but high compression ratio the petrol engine starting knocking so not move..

in petrol engine need spark to ignite, which can't be used in diesel in the same way in diesel engine we need high compression to ignite which can't take place in petrol engine.

due to some schmucks, who forgot that they had petrol engine and fueled them selves with diesel, that car was fine till the petrol completely emptied and when the diesel kicked in the car was having all types of horrible knocking bumps
this experiment was done by a show "Fifth Gear" and the result was petrol car worked in diesel and diesel car worked in petrol, however the latter case experienced more trouble in driving
to answer your question, yes it is possible to interchange the fuel, but don't expect it to be smooth
