Intrinsic safety (i.e., IS) refers to a method of explosion protection for equipment that is designed to prevent the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere. It involves limiting the energy and spark potential of electrical components within the equipment, such that they cannot ignite flammable substances in the surrounding environment.
