what are the reaction between sodium meta bi sulphate and
chlorine?

what are the reaction between sodium meta bi sulphate and chlorine?..

Answer / linto k. john

Sodium Meta Bi Sulfite (SMBS) is used as a dechlorination agent.
It is widely used in the water treatment industry. The free chlorine in water causes oxidation of RO/Nano Filtration membranes and affect the performance of treatment system.
The basic chemistry behind the dechlorination process is as follows

Chlorine may be either chlorine gas or hypochlorites of sodium or calcium.
When combined with water they hydrolyse to form hypochlorous acid.
1. Cl2 + H2O = HOCl + HCl
2. NaOCl + H2O = HOCl + NaOH
3. Ca(OCl)2 + 2 H2O = 2HOCl + Ca(OH)2

Sodium Meta Bi Sulfite dissolves (SMBS) in water to form Sodium Bi sulfite (SBS)
NaS2O5 + H2O = 2NaHSO3

Sodium bi sulfite react with Hypochlorous acid as follows
2NaHSO3 + 2HOCl = Na2SO4 + H2SO4 + 2HCl

We are having proplem with the persperation smell in ETT/ECHO room in our cardiac hospital. The 2 Ton of AC is not conditioning the environment. We have to use exhaust fan to through out of the room bad air. Could anyone suggest how to coup with this effectively using chemical engineering. Any permanent solution to neutralise the bad smell. The Air freshners are not doing enough instead making a bad odour.

CHEMICAL FLUID MECHANIC - EXAMPLE 3.1 : Water flows through a pipe with circular cross sectional area at the rate of V / t = 80 L / s where V is the volume and t is time. Let Av = 80 L / s where A is cross sectional area and v is velocity of fluid. For point 1, the radius of the pipe is 16 cm. For point 2, the radius of the pipe is 8 cm. Find (a) the velocity at point 1; (b) the velocity at point 2; (c) the pressure at point 2 by using Bernoulli's equation where P + Rgy + 0.5 RV = constant. P is the pressure, R = density of fluid, V = square of fluid's velocity, g = gravitational constant of 9.81 N / kg and y = 2 m = difference of height at 2 points. The pressure of point 1 is 180 kPa.
