Knuckle joint is used to connect two rods whose axes either coincide or intersect and lie in one plane, which are subjected to transmit axial TENSILE force on other hand cotter joint is used to connect two co-axial rods, which are subjected to either axial force or axial compressive force.

Basically , cotter joint is used in which there is no angular displacement between two rod o the other hand the knuckle joint is used in which there is necessity of angular displacement for e.G." in goods train coneect two goods coach at that time cotter joint does not used.there is necessity of some angular displacement during chanhe a railway track(indian railway)."
