DC machines are broadly of two types viz Motor or generator.
Both works on the principle of electomagnetic induction.
Generator:- Due to relative motion between magnetic flux
and winding, an emf is induced in it.
Motor: Due to the current flowing through the winding and
magnetic field flux, a force is experienced by the
conductor.

2 principles
1 is hetropolar
In the case of a hetero-polar generator the
induced emf in a conductor goes through a
cyclic change in voltage as it passes under north and south
pole polarity alternately.
2 is Homo polar
Even though the magnetic poles occur in pairs,
in a homo-polar generator the conductors
are arranged in such a manner that they always move under
one polarity. Either north pole
or south pole could be used for this purpose. Since the
conductor encounters the magnetic
flux of the same polarity every where it is called a homo
polar generator.

DC machine are both motor/ generator works on
electromagnetic induction principle
MOTOR:
The current carrying conductor placed in magnetic field the
force exist on that conductor.according to Faraday laws of
electromagnetic induction principle.field indicates Flemming
left hand rule
GENERATOR:
When ever a conductor cuts the magnetic field the an EMF
Induced that conductor.according to Faraday laws of
electromagnetic induction principle.field indicates Flemming
Right hand rule
