for star connections if the load is balanced, the phasor
sum of the three currents is zero.
but if the load is unbalanced, the all three phases do not
carry the same load or if there is any fault, a current
passes thru the neutral and the amount is equal to the
current that balances the all three phase currents.

We know that,in a star connection for balanced condition the
phasor sum of three line current is zero. As a result in
balanced condition there is no neutral current. But in
unbalanced condition the sum is not zero and a current is
flowed through the neutral wire.
