the 1ph supply applied to stator wdng cant produce a
rotating magnetic field as in the case of a 3ph induction
motor..
if a 1ph is applied to the induction motor the resulting
magnetic field is only altrnating (not rotating)..
In order to make the 1ph induction motor self starting...,
2 windings are used ..startin windin n runnin wdng..called
split phase motor.. or by connectin a capacitor in series
with the start wdng.. for obtainin necessary phase
diplacement...

Single phase IM given single phase supply given to stator
winding an alternating magnetic field develop in stator and
produce alternating flux and collides with rotor winding and
produce induced EMF at rotor since the rotor winding are
closed this produce induced current in rotor.
Due to this induced current in magnetic field of alternating
nature and this nature is not rotating. Both magnetic field
in stator and rotor are Colline's so resultant torque rotor
will 0. Hence single phase IM does not self start.
In order to make motor self start an external force to the
rotor should be given because of locking of field will
disappear.
