Answer / Gayatri Baghel
A Catalytic Converter works by reducing harmful exhaust emissions from internal combustion engines. It contains a catalyst, usually made of precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium, which speeds up the conversion of pollutants into less harmful substances. The three main reactions that occur in a catalytic converter are:
1. Oxidation reaction - Converts carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) into carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O).
2. Reduction reaction - Converts nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2).
3. Poisoning reaction - Traps unburned fuel, metals, and other contaminants.
