It basically runs on second law of thermodynamics which
says you have to consume some work to lift heat from low to
high temparature.
specifically there are some cycle like vapour compression
refrigeration cycle, absorption refrigeration cycle,
gas cycle etc.
but their basics are same like discussed above...

it works on the reverse of 2nd law of thermodynamics which
says heat flows from higher level to lower level but it can
be reversed by some external arrangements ie.refrigeration
equipments.
