what is the difference between application based and web
based in cognos?can you please give a example from out of
EP 7 series and 8 series?genrel exampel please?

In what context? as far as i can see, application based is
the reports we create in impromptu and web based are the
reports(IWR) we publish at upfront.

Application based are the reports that we create using
impromptu.
And Web based are the reports created using cognos 8.x versions.
In application based, to create a report you will need a
tool installed in your local machine. eg: impromptu is a
tool using which you will create the imr(impromptu reports)
in cognos 7.x. Same is the case with Powerplay 7.x or 8.x
you need the software to be installed to create the
cubes/models.
Whereas in web based, you access the tool that is installed
in the server over the intranet. These software doesnt need
anything to be installed on your system to create a report.
eg: Report studio, query studio, analysis studio etc..
This is referred to as zero foot print technology by cognos.
FYI: Not all the tools in cognos 8.x are web based. For eg
cognos administration is an application based tool. Unless
you have it installed on your system you cannot access it.
