On what property u can distinguish material as brittle or
ductile?

Answer / karthick
i think it depends on hardness and tensile strength.if
hardness is more then tensile strength will be low, then it
is brittle material on the other hand if tensile strength
is more then hardness will be low.then it is ductile
material.Mostly the material used to cut another material
falls under brittle and the material to be cut falls under
ductile

usually brittle and ductile materials r classified according
to their rate of its plastic deformation .rubber seem to be
elastic material but it consider brittle material not
ductile

In Mechanical Engineering, a material is considered brittle
if the extension at tensile failure is 5% or less. If the
extension is more than 5%, the material is ductile.
Cast iron is considered brittle.
Steels are considered ductile but there is a wide range of
values. Hardened and tempered steels, like high tensile
steel for bolting, is not very ductile compared to annealed
carbon steel. Allen screw steel is even less ductile.

Why to think so deep??
Simply, the material which can be drawn into wires
(ductility)are ductile otherwise brittle..........

Answer / sathish
In ductile materials (ductile fracture), the crack moves slowly and is accompanied by a large amount of plastic deformation. The crack will usually not extend unless an increased stress is applied. On the other hand, in dealing with brittle fracture, cracks spread very rapidly with little or no plastic deformation. The cracks that propagate in a brittle material will continue to grow and increase in magnitude once they are initiated.

i think they are asking about the property of the material
so perfect word would be the ductility and malleability to
describe the ductile or brittle material, other properties
can be- elasticity- ductile more elastic , hardness -
brittle more hard

Based on Basic Crystal structure ((i.e, Body Centered Ccubic, Face Centered Cubic, Hexagonal Close Packing structures)) the material can be determined to be ductile or brittle((or other properties too viz STRENGTH, DENSITY, CONDUTIVITY AND SHAPE...
Materials with BCC structure: High strength, but low ductility
Materials with FCC structure: Less strength, highly ductile than BCC.
Materials with HCP structure: Less Ductile then FCC materials.
