minimum in IDMT refers to the minimum time.IDMT is relay
which has a characteristic of detecting a fault..ib which
the operating time has an inverse relationship with
magnitude of fault current.and the relay is such designed
that within a given time it has to trip the CB.thats whhy it
is called inverse definite medium time relay.

Inverse Definite Minimum Time (IDMT). It works inversely to
the nature of fault occurred. If nature of fault is more
time taken to trip will be less.If the fault occurred is
less time taken to trip will be more.

well all the people who answered this please note that an
idmt relay is different from an inverse realy in the manner
that it shows the inverse operating behaviour only uptill
the pick up value is attained and after that it attains a
constant operating behaviour that is its operating time
becomes independent of the magnitude of the fault current .
