why reinforcement is not provided at centre for beams r column

Answer / raghuram
MAIN PURPOSE OF REINFORCEMENT IN BEAMS IS TO RESIST TENSION
IN THE LOWER FIBRES BELOW THE NEUTRAL AXIS. AS THE TENSILE
STRESS IS 0 AT THE CENTRE AND INCREASES LINEARLY TO THE
BOTTOM FIBRE WHICH INDICATES THAT MAX TENSILE STRESS IS AT
THE EXTREME FIBRES SO REINFORCEMENT IS NOT PROVIDED AT THE
CENTRE

in centre there is no compression and tension.. so we
provide reinforcement in the corners
Is This Answer Correct ? | 40 Yes | 17 No |
The concrete weak in tension and strong in compression.
to resist the load in tension side reinforcement
provided. To make proper anchorage nominal reinforcement
provided in compression reinforcement.
if we provide reinforcement in center it canot contribute
either compression and tension. So no need to provide
reinforcement in center of beams.
If depth of beam large i.e more than 700mm normally we
provide extra reinforcement at center to hold the
compression reinforcement properly
But only in case when beam subjected torsion ,to resist
torsional moment we provide extra reinforcement in center.

Answer / koushik
Column is a compression member ,and this compression force
is distrubuted by concrete and steel. If ther is any
eccentric forces act then reinforcement at extreme fibres
will take care of those tensile stresses.so,there wont b
any tensile stress at centre of column so no need of
reinforcement at centre

Why do we provide steel to the concrete, is it not for
taking tension as concrete can take only compression.
As we know that the maximum tension takes place on the
outer face of the beam or column, therefore the the steel
is provided to the outer face of the beam or column.

first of all i would like to make the Question very Clear
Y reinforcement is not provided at centre for beams is not
complte Question .
Actually reinforcement is not provided in centre of beam at
top ,while the case is reverse for bottom reinforcement ,
at bottom reinforcement are provided at centre .
This is all bcoz of moment ,
Since the moment is max at centre of beam ,
if u have idea of elastic curve then it would be very
clear .
and It should also not that reinforcement is not provided ,
in such region where reinf is not required nominal reif are
provided

Answer / abhishek
Reinforcement mainly required in region where tension is high, therefore tension is more on the outer portion of structure as compare to the middle part
So, reinforcement is provided on sides.

Answer / beamers
Beams are not provided with reinforcement at the middle
(center)simply because stress at that section is minimal if
you know the strain diagram of a beam section, that even
you provide steel on center the beam will not utilized
these bar because these bar will not yield meaning
useless, but in practice if your beam depth is greater than
600 mm we provide side bars. One analogy is that if you are
using hollow tube either circular or rectangular,as beam or
column members even though its hollow still they can carry
much load because external fiber of section is most
stressed.
