Why Transformer Neutral having one earth pit ( more earth
electrode resistance) whereas body have many earth pit (
less earth electrode resistance)?
Answer / Rasid Khan
The number of earth pits for a transformer's neutral and body are determined based on different factors related to electrical safety, mechanical strength, and grounding requirements.
1. Earth Electrode Resistance: The transformer body has multiple earth pits to reduce the earth electrode resistance and provide a more efficient grounding path. This helps in minimizing stray currents and reducing the risk of overheating or electrical faults.
2. Mechanical Strength: The transformer body requires multiple earth anchors for mechanical strength and stability. This helps in maintaining the structural integrity of the transformer during high-voltage surges and earthquakes.
3. Neutral Grounding: The neutral point of a transformer is grounded through a single earth pit due to electrical safety reasons. By connecting the neutral point to only one earth electrode, the risk of ground loops and circulating currents can be minimized.
4. Ground Loop Issues: A ground loop occurs when multiple points in an electrical circuit are connected to different parts of the Earth's surface. This can cause unwanted voltage differences and interference. By grounding the transformer body through multiple earth pits, the risk of creating a ground loop around the neutral point is minimized.
