Inverter inverts the applied signal' means an inverter give
the reverse output of applied input.while
converter converts the signal in one form to another form,
that can be either ac to dc OR dc to ac,

In initial stages of Power elex only AC-DC converters i.e.
rectifiers were invented and in loose talks rectifiers were
called as converters and from here they got the name
converter. And this is why inverter(antonym of converter)
are called so, as they do the the inverse job of a
converter(rectifier).
So converter: AC-DC
inverter : DC-AC
