any loss or benefit.

The above answer is correct And what I have experienced is
whenever we put the fixed capacitor in parallel to DG , at
any moment if load falls to certain value then consequence
KVAr (inductive ) will also reduce.Due to the fixed
capacitor the available KVAr(capacitance)is excess in the
circuit. This leads to leading current in the generator
armature circuit.Armature reaction takes place with this
leading currrent that causes excess induced EMF that
results in high voltage.this high voltage reference may be
harmful to AVR of the alternator.

Alternators are normally designed at 0.8 pf lag.It is not
advisable to run DG with capacitor banks switched ON.But as
you approach to maximum loading the winding temp.may
increase leading to tripping if cooling of alternator is
not efficient. In such a case you can put ON a few capacitor
banks & monitor the pf.Maintain pf somewhere between 0.85
to 0.90 lag.Result is the current drops and so is the
alternator temperature. This we have practically done with
our DGs.

Capacitors are used to recover the reactive component of
power (part of power utilized for manetization in
windings). It does not matter the source generating the
voltage is Diesel Generator,steam-driven Alternator or any
other source generating A.C supply.Capacitors are always
beneficial on AC supply if the power-factor is maintained
below Unity (using a power-factor regulating relay), on
lagging side.If power-factor is not maintained through
regulating relays then it has the tendency to go on leading
side which means ,over magnetization of windings.

capacitors are used for produce the inductive power, so that
we can reduce the active power. i.e, genset producing
current is low. Normally when the motor ON some magnetic
field is also produced That magnetic field consume more
current, when we use the capacitor in parallel with the
circuit. It is Balanced.
so capacitor used .9 to .95 (lead/lag) to reduce the
load(producing current) to save the fuel.
