In a series wound motor, the stator is connected in series with the rotor so, if the series winding (stator) is opened, current ceases to flow thru the motor and it will come to a stop.

in dc motors Eb is proportional to speed/flux,so if field
opens the motor speed will be dangerously increased and
leads to damage the motor.

The speed of a series wound DC motor will increase as soon
as the excitation deceases. But if we remove the excitation,
the motor speed will tend to increase, because of the
residual magnetism, and the rotor winding will burns off,
because of short circuit.
