whenever the mould is closed, there is some gap in between
cope and drag which allows some molten material to flow
sidewards when poured into the cavity. This extra material
on the final compaonent is called flash.

FLASH: This term occurs in two processes 1.Die
casting(moulding process) 2.Impression die forging.In both
cases it is unnecessary metal that is formed during process
which is trimmed off later.

Term Flash has no connection with moulding process. It is
acually connected with closed die forging operations. When
a component is formed using an upper and lower die in a
forging press, the die desing has flash(or the die has)
where in excess metal goes.
