i think to find any fault on it easily. And any moisture content or dust content and any breaks are easily noted. brown is easily seen below the sky and above the ground.

To make it less visible when seen from above (merges with the
ground colour which is brown mostly) and thereby minimize the
risk of air borne attack during wars.
Similarly grey is chosen in US and certain other countries so
that the insulator merges with the sky above when seen from
ground and make it harder to aim and shoot (prevent vandalism)
