Surge current is the faulty current produced due to some short circuit and is capable of burning the equipment so earthing is used to provide it a low resistant path for grounding.
Surge current means an instantaneous current of very high amplitude.
Surge voltage would be in case of open circuit condition.

In underground cables,we have a grading method called 'capacitance grading'.Why is it called 'capacitance grading' although we do not use any capacitor in it?
