Major losses in a t/f are copper losses and iron losses.
copper losses depends on load current and iron losses depends on voltage. hence broadly we can say cu-losses proportional to I and core losses prpnl to V so we specify rating of transformer as product of these two VI which in nothing but VA, for transformers of higher rating this will be in KVA or MVA.

There is a two reasons
1) because of major losses in the machine that is copper and iron losses.
2)the machine only transfer the voltage and current that is why trasformer and generator called in KVA
