This answer is true only if the mortar volume specified is for wet mortar. If it is for dry mortar than the coverage will reduce due to shrinkage factor from dry to wet

plaster only Wet Mortar
1cum /.012 = 83.33 sqm.

2- one Cum cement mortar will cover 83.33 sqm. of 12mm th.
plaster only Dry Mortar = 0.50 Wet Mortar
0.5 cum /.012 = 41.67 sqm.
