The transformer is a static electric divice. It operates in the principle of electro magnetic induction. it transfers the electricity from the two different closed circuits without any physical contact.
The winding ratio will decide the changing the voltage.
If the primary winding having the less number of winding comparing to secondary winding, that transformer is called step up transformer and vise versa.
If the primary winding and secondary winding are in 1:3 ratio then the voltage will be increased to 3 times of primary side voltage.
