All transformer has the capability to produce AC only, so
when a process require DC for some important properties a
rectifying circuit is added to transformer to produce DC
from AC.

Function of both machines are same, the main difference is in the sense of size,rectifier type machines are compact and easy to transport from one place to other.It can easily carry in hands.But transformer type machines are heavy in construction.
