We can simply say that the power factor is how the machine
effectively consume the active power.For example if the
motor runs at 0.8pf it consumes 80% of active power and 20%
of reactive power.
Theoretically speaking the power factor is defined as the
cosine value of angle which between the voltage and current

Power Factor means the angle between the voltage & current.
Its value varies of different type of equipments but should
maintain 0.99

Its the cosine of the angle between the voltage and current.
Form tranmission point of view, P = VI*pf,so for constant
voltage and current, power factor should be as near to unity
as possible to achieve maximum power, in practice from
transmission point of view its kept in between 0.9-0.95, but
again the higher the better [provided it's cost effective]
