what does a retarder actually when applied in an automobile??..

the engines output is utilized to other accessories like
compressor, electric dynamos etc and reduce the power to the
wheels making the vehicle move slowly and when released the
automobile gains the actual speed ...which in turn enhances
the efficiency from braking and sudden accelerations..
