Typically in the industry, below signal type is used as communication protocol between field devices and marshalling/system cabinet.
Analog signal = 4-20mA, HART protocol for advance application
Digital signal = 0-24V
Alternatively, there is also PROFIBUS and FIELDBUS.
In terms of cabling, instrument cable is a typical 1-2mm copper multicore cable while bus cable refers to application involving PROFIBUS and FIELDBUS.
