As per a mathematician fourier transform is used to reduce
partial differential equation in an ordinary differential
equation and ordinary differential equation can be reduce to
linear algebraic equation. In technical field it is used to
convert a signal from time domain to frequency domain.

fourier transform is used to convert an "aperiodic" time
domain signal to a frequency domain signal...
and for periodic signals we have fourier series to do the job
