In beams why the depth is > width

Answer / ayush agarwal
we know that
M= wl2/8 ie. B.M. is directly proportional to
load coming on beam.
also from other eqn. M= .87 fy Ast(d-.42xu)
hence to carry coming load along with self wt. beam must be
strong in tension. Since Ast is inversly proportional to
depth of beam lesser the depth of beam more will be required
Ast. For this purpose we use depth greater than width so
that steel requirement will be less hence section will be
economical.

Answer / syam
beam is flexural member.flexural regidity EI is greater if I is greater.I=bd3/12.so if d is more than the b,the beam will be more rigid with respect to flexure than the other case.

if depth > width. Then the mom of inertia 'i' of the section will be more. since Mom. of Inertia is bd^3/12 for rectangular sections. As (M=fi/y) i is more then m moment carrying capacity will be more.
