dc series motor can work in ac also.while connecting to ac
there is change in flux due to the alternative nature of
the ac supply, that cuts by the armature which results the
rotation of the armature.

in ac both polarity changes which changes the flux and current
direction in field and armature simultaneously. as torque is product of flux and current(in armature)is always positive hence it will rotate in one direction only.for this series motor is also called universal motor.
