1.For long distance transmission.
2.To reduce antenna height because of high frequency carrier
signal. As antenna height is inversly proportional to the
frequency
3. to avoid the mixing or to avoid interference.

Answer / shafaq sopori
It is of great importance in telecommunication.in earlier days,we use signals without modulating and that signal reaches only some specific distance and the problem gets created.
To overcome this problem a simple weak signal is carried on another wave known as carrier wave which helps it to reach at large distances.
Thus modulation is necessary.

1.Interference from other signals
This is a point from the practical side of things. Suppose you are transmitting the baseband signal as it is to a receiver , say your friends phone. Just like you , there will be thousands of people of people in the city using their mobile phones.
2.Wireless Communication
By using modulation to transmit the signals through space to long distances, we have removed the need for wires in the communication systems. The technique of modulation helped humans to use wireless equipment in a bug way in their lives .
3.Size of the Antennae
When the transmission occurs over free space, the antennae radiate the signal out and receiver receives it. In order to operate efficiently, antennae need to be in order of the magnitude of wavelength of the transmitted signal.

Modulation(in electronics and telecommunications) is the process or varying one or more of a periodic waveform, called ther carrier signal, with a modulating signal that typically contaons information to be trnasmitted.
A modulator is a device that perform modulation.
* Frequecy modulation(FM)
*Phase modulation(PM)
*Tranpostional modulation(TM)
