What is the range of efficiency of thermal or steam power
plants?
Why it is so low?

What is the range of efficiency of thermal or steam power plants? Why it is so low?..

Answer / iamdon

By employing super critical technology( Temperature more
than 600 degree celcius and pressure of steam 30 N/mm2 )
overall efficiency upto 50% can be achieved but in rest of
the cases the efficiency is well below 50%.
The range of efficiency of steam power plants is 30-50 %.
The typical value is 35%.

The reason of low efficiency is statistically stated as.
Approx 10% of heat is lost with flue gases.
Approx 50% of heat is lost in condensor.
These two are mainly responsible for low overall efficiency
of steam power plants.

Thermal cycle(Rankine cycle) efficiency=30-40%
Generator and Turbine efficiency=90% +
