Suppose a column is of 1mx1m dimension adn load is of barely
1 ton(no moment), will u provide the total minimum steel
reinforcement, if not what will u do..?

one thing can be done is to reduce the size of the column. 1
ton means 10kN. To carry 10kN a column of size 230mm X 230mm
is sufficient. If its not possible to change the size of the
column, then its clearly mentioned in the code IS456 that,
for sections which are larger than required, then the
minimum steel areas (0.8% B D)are to be based on concrete
area required to resist the direct stress, and not on the
actual area of concrete columns.
