Residue of Ignition and sulphated ash has no more difference except the fact that sulfuric acid is added when sulphated ash is done and in residue on ignition no such chemicals are added before ignition.
However the question is, which one is better testing method for finding any kind of impurities.
Not much but if we go through the theoritical facts, residue on ignition will be better choice. To support the fact, all the impurities that remains in residue on ignition test can be tested . But when sulfuric acid is added in sulphated ash , only the sulphate counterparts or sulphate related reaction product wwill be detected.

the sulphates ash basically heavy metals more of calcium contents. when calcium oxide burns with sulphuric acid. it will convert to calcium sulphate. it will not evoparate. it remains in crucible as coloured residue. it may not be sodium sulphate because . sodium sulphate is burns completely and evaporated at high temp in muffle furnace.it is my experience. . not as expertise view.

loss of ignition: high temperature inorganic substance converted into organic substance but not use in sulphuric acid.
sulphate ash: using sulphuric acid is reduced inorganic substance into organic impurity ash is high temperature but particular test perform different temperature

Residue after ignition is called Residue on ignition.
The ash remains after again ignited it adding 1 ml of
suphuric acid is called sulphated ash.

Residue on ignition and sulphate ash both are same meaning
Terminalogy is different.
Before ignite add the Sulfuricacid
As per USP it is Residue on ignition (Ignited at 800°C
+/- 50°C)
As per BP and EP it is called as Sulphate ash (ignition
temperature of 600°C +/- 25°C).
