SHORT OR LONG COLOUMN DEPENDS ON THE SLENDERNESS RATIO THAT
IS THE RATIO OF LENGTH TO RADIUS OF GYRATION. SO IT DEPENDS
ON THE LENGTH OF THE COLOUMN. IF SLENDERNESS RATIO IS LESS
THAN 12 THAEN IT IS CALLED AS A SHORT COLUMN & VICA VERSA

In RCC structure,The ratio of effective length to the lateral
minimum side/diameter of column should be less than 12,is
called short column.
According to Strength of Material:-The slenderness ratio
should less than 32 ,is called short column.
It is depend on both height and diameter of column.

In connection with RCC structures the ratio of effctive
length to least lateral dimension (i.e Dia) is less than 12,
it is called short column.
similarly in steel structures , if slenderness ratio is
less than 120 it is short column

Slenderness ratio:
Ly/Lx>12
shortcolumn.
Ly/Lx<12 long column.

May be the short or long column depends on the radius of
gyration. But, for me Long column are those, which are
generally failure from bending moment and material failure.
For short column are those which are failed by only material
failure.
