on what basis the partial factor of safety are decided? form the load combinations..

Answer / Kamlesh Kumar Singh

The partial factor of safety (PSF) is used in structural design to account for uncertainties and variability in material properties, loading conditions, and human errors. The selection of PSF values depends on several factors:n
1. Load Combinations: According to various load combinations specified in the relevant codes and standards, such as dead loads, live loads, snow loads, wind loads, earthquake loads, etc.n
2. Importance Level: Structures with higher importance levels (e.g., buildings with high occupancy) usually have lower PSF values to ensure their safety during extreme loading conditions.n
3. Material Properties: The properties of the materials used in the structure also affect the selection of the partial factor of safety.n
4. Serviceability Limit State and Ultimate Limit State: Partial factors are chosen differently for serviceability limit states (SLS) and ultimate limit states (ULS). SLS involves the assessment of the structure's ability to perform its intended function while ULS focuses on preventing the collapse or failure of the structure.n
