if the reinforcement is placed on the tension zone the beam
is termed as single reinforced beam(generally bottom side)
If the reinforcement is placed on both tension and
compression zone the beam is called doubly reinforced beam

Single reinforcement means, reinforcement is placed only on one side of the beam (generally, bottom side). In double reinforcement, reinforcement is placed at bottom as well as at the top of the beam.
