Grade oil always depend on manufacturer recomemded and also
refer to same as abdul hameed say ans on viscocity, fire
point, flash point,but this question to general u must
describe what gear box, where use it, industrial or
automotive.

any gear box have gears of some
type(spur,helical,herringbone,worm bla bla bla\\\\\\\) and
for sure the gears have tooth/teeth hihhihihihihi
and by law the "mesh" and rotate.

there are oil cooled gears boxes
there are grease cooled gear boxes
generally SAE 90 SAE 140 ARE IN WIDE USE
BUT STILL AS I SAID NO RULE OF THUMB
