it actually depends on a way a person interprets it ..
can be classified as general purpose registers(GPR s) and special function registers (SFR s)..
or in specific to 8086--
1. general registers (AX, BX, CX, DX)
2. index and pointer registers (DI, SI, BP, SP)
3. flag register

There are two types of registers in register set of 8086
microprocessor,they are (1)General purpose registers and
(2)Special purpose registers.
(1)General purpose registers constitute
Ax-Accumulator,Bx-Base,Cx-Counter and Dx-Data.
(2)Special purpose registers constitute
->Segment registers(core segment,stack segment,data segment
and extra segment)
->Pointer registers(stack pointer,base pointer,index pointer)
->Index registers(source index, destination index)
->Flag or status registers are of two catagories,
*control flags(directional flag, interrupt flag,track
flag)
*status flags(over flow flag, sign flag,zero
flag,auxiliary flag,parity flag,carry flag and future
flag)
