PVC-Poly Vinyl Chloride & XLPE-Cross Link Poly Ethylene are
the insulations used on the cables
PVC is thin insulation mainly used in LT side cables
XLPE is thick insulation used in HT cables
(OperatingTemp)(SC Temp)(MoistureRes)(Fire Res)
PVC 70 130 V.Good Excellent
XLPE 90 250 V.Good Fair

XLPE has the following advantages over PVC insulated cables:
1. Higher current carrying capacity as it can withstand
higher temperature compared to PVC cable.
2.They have high overload capacity.
3.Lighter in weight, smaller bend radius, hence lesser
installation cost.
4.It has higher short circuit rating.
5.It has lower di -electric and constant power factor :
This results in saving of power losses.

xlpe is known as cross linked poly ethelyene it can with
stand for higher temperature(90'c) as compared to pvc.It
has high mechanical strength. As compared to pvc it is
better for underground laying of cables for higher
temperature.

Hello All-
While all of the answers are for the most part technically correct they do not answer the fundamental question presented. The differences in PVC versus XLPE is that PVC can be extruded, melted and re-extruded (or formed as Thermoplastic compound) while XLPE is a thermoset (or setting) which means it is not capable or regaining it's thermal melting point to be reconfigured or re-extruded. Due to these properties (melting is a result of heat) Thermoset is by it's nature prone to better results in higher temperature environments.
At the end of the day, insulation is insulation and both Thermoplastic or Thermoset have temperature ratings (in terms of wire/cable) at 90 °C . However, the thermoset properties of thermal breakdown are better in this case. Typical building wiring uses Thermoplastic (THHN/THWN-2) which is a PVC Thermoplastic product. However, the use of Thermoset insulation like XHHW (notice the "X") does have a higher property for potential temperature values even if the baseline for NEC use is 90 °C . For example, in an emergency situation the XLPE insulation threshold can reach up to 140 °C depending on the various standards employed.
Crosslinking improves the elevated-temperature properties of the base polymer. Adequate strength to 120–150 °C is maintained by reducing creep, the tendency to flow. Chemical resistance is enhanced by resisting dissolution. Low temperature properties are improved. Impact and tensile strength, scratch resistance, and resistance to brittle fracture are enhanced.
They key is this in terms of product manufacturing, the thermoplastic insulation is always less mils than the thermoset insulation and thermoplastic tends to have (not required) a nylon outer coating to the insulation which adds some protective value which is gained in XLPE without the nylon due to an increased mils insulation value.
Hope this was helpful.

xlpe cable can stand for higher temperature(90'c)as
compared to pvc.PVC cables can stand for temperature(70'c).
Pvc cable more reliable from xlpe cables.
But XLPE has the following advantages over PVC insulated
cables:
1.They have high overload capacity.
2.Lighter in weight, smaller bend radius, hence lesser
installation cost.
3.It has higher short circuit rating.
4.It has lower di -electric and constant power factor :
This results in saving of power losses.

xlpe cable is very good chemical resistant & moisture
resistant..It can be used for very high voltage. It can be
used for very high temperature also because it isn't
changes its characteristics for very hightemperature also...

xlpe can withstand higher & lower tempratures, it is also
lighter in weight, insulation is usually thinner but the
resistance is higher, xlpe also has a higher moisture &
chemical resistance.

PVC cable does not mean anything.Conductor insulation can
be made of PVC or XLPE depending on selection by designer.
Outer sheath and innersheath is made of PVC or Polyethylene
in both the cases.
PVC is Polyvinyl Chloride and XLPE is cross linked Poly
ethylene which is more chemically stable
XLPE cable can be used for Low, medium and high voltage
applications. Conductor is insulated with XLPE which can
withstand higher conductor temperature during normal and
short circuit condition. It has better insulation value,
lighter in weight and better current capacity with lesser
bending radius.
Depending on application, it is selected and in areas which
is having moisture XLPE cables are preferred. It has lesser
chance of mechanical damage and can be used for underground
application with armouring and MDPE outersheathing.

XLPE got more Capacity to hold on incise of high temperature. XLPE will not deteriorate it's insulation property until it reaches 90 degree centigrade. it will not suddenly loss it's insulation property if the temperature jump above 90 degree centigrade, but the overall life of cable will be reduced. PVC can withstand temperature only up to 70 degree centigrade.
PVC is cheaper then XLPE.
PVC is thermoplastic whereas XLPE is thermosetting plastic.
PVC= poly vilyn chloride & XLPE = Cross link polyethylene.
