Answer / akt
Breather are used to absorb the moisture content from the
sucked air, while the transformer oil gets expanded due to
heating. Breathers make use of silica gel coloured with
brown used extensively in power transformers.
when its absorb moisture its colour change and become pink

Answer / nivas
When transformer undergoes load changes, there will be an
volumetric expansion and contraction of oil.
When the oil undergoes contraction, transformer breathes air
into the conservator tank. To avoid moisture and dirt
entering into tank, breathers are provided with silica gel
crystals.

breather is used in the transformer for suction of air to
the transformer tank for cooling purposes.when the oil is
expanded due to heating.
in breather there is an arrangment of oil cup & silica jel.
the silics gel is used for absorbtion of moisture in the
air. the dusty particals are accumulated at the inlet of
the breather of the transformer.
plz, anybody give another ans...
then welcome.

Transformer is breathing like human. When air is going
inside it contain moisture. To avoid short circuit due to
moisture, breather is used. When air passes through breather
it became dry. Result long life of transformer

Breather plays a vital role in the power transformers.
When the transformer gets loaded, the cooling oil in the
transformer tank gets heated and due to which the volume of
the oil in the tank expands as per its property with
respect to the load and duly gains its original when it
attains cool.
Hence,to perform such cushioning action, the transformer
requires a way to push & pull the air.Without which the
tranformer would burst drastically.
While performing the action, normally the water content in
the moiture enters into the tank, which inturn leads to
short circuit.Hence to avoid ,a silica gel / crystal
chamber fitted just adjacent to the breather, which captures
the water content while air intake thro' breather.

Breathers provide an economic and efficient means of
controlling the level of moisture entering electrical
equipment during the change in volume of the cooling medium
and/or airspace caused by temperature gradients

breather is used to remove the moisture if present any in
air

If anybody have seen the transformer carefully then you
must notice that breather is installed at the vent pipe
connected to the Oil tank & the open end of the vent pipe
in tank is on top.
In any kind of fault condition , if the heat is produced &
Oil gets expand then it will increase the volume of oil in
tank & excessive oil will be get drain through the way of
vent pipe , but in the healthy condition only are passed
through the vent pipe & obvisiosy air definately contain
the part of Moisture & as the moisuture is the one of the
enimy of electrical sustem , it needs to be prevent while
enrering in to the transformer . for that breather is
arranged the dry silica gel is put in to breather & once
the air passes thorogh breather as per silica property it
will absorb the moisture & change its own colour to the
pink,. once it shows the pink colour immediately open the
breather . remove the silica & apply heat for some period
of time & again you can re use it.
result shows that moisure can reduce the dielectrica
strengh of oil.
the good quality oil can sustain its property up to 50 KV &
the oil with some oil gave away at 18 kv.

Hi frnds :) plz tell me that i have 100 KVA 3 phase generator so by thumb rule 100*1.4 = 144 amps and generaly we can operate at 80% load...so it will 144*0.8 =112 amps.... so now i m confused about single phase load.....if we use that generator only for single phase the that 112 amps is total single phase load or i can give 112 amps at red 112 amps at yellow and 112 amps at blue.... i mean that total single phase load that 100 KVA generator will take is 112+112+112=336 amp ??
