surge suppressors are used to protect the contactor from
heavy current. it is nothing but a simple circuit of
resistor and capacitor. It helps to suppress the surge.

Surge suppressor is nothing but a Lightning arrestor.
It consists of a spark gap in series with a non-linear
resistor nd provides protection to terminal equipment 4m
high voltage travelling waves.

protect electrical devices from voltage spikes.
The voltage supplied to any electrical device is regulated
either by blocking or by shorting to ground voltages above a
safe threshold.

equipment due to these heavy surges.
