Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
sound waves are used to detect flaws usually internal
cracks.the difference in reflecting back the sound waves in
good metal and cracked metal are different and using its
intensity(sound) the location and depth are measured

Ultrasonic flaw detectoris a non destructing testing
equipment. From the name anyone can easily understand that
it is used for detecting the internal flaws of a casting or
a forged component. It would be possible detect the defect
size and also the depth at which flaw is present. there are
two types. Single Probe and Two probe types./ They use
peizo crystal materials (Quartz) which has a unique
characteristic of giving mechanical vibrations when
elctrically excited and when mechanical vibrations are
given giving electrical output. This characteristic
property along with an oscilloscope will be used.

this technique is generally used 2 find out internal cracks
or defects
wat happens is ultrasonic waves r made 2 pass through a
component in which internal defect if any needs to be
found. once they find any discontinuity or crack they r
reflected back which assures any internal cracks.

Answer / sanjay singh samant
ultrasonic flaw detector is not only used for detecting
sufrace defects but also used to find out inclusions,
delaminations at the exact locations([particular depth).
Based on A-scan and c-scan method we can find out the depth
of damage, inclusions, porosity and other defects.
there is limitation that it can,t be used for irregular
sufraces because it causes more attenuationa and scattering
of sound waves.
