How were the ideas of the Upanishadic thinkers different from that of the fatalists and materialists?
Answer / Anoop Agarwal
The Upanishadic thinkers, who lived during the Vedic period (1500-500 BCE), focused on philosophical inquiries into the nature of reality, the self, and the universe. They sought to understand the ultimate purpose of life and the nature of Brahman (the absolute reality). In contrast, the fatalists and materialists held a pessimistic view of life and believed that human actions had little effect on their fate. The Upanishadic thinkers, however, emphasized the importance of knowledge and action in attaining liberation from the cycle of rebirth (moksha). They also rejected the idea of a static universe and instead proposed the concept of Brahman as the underlying reality that pervades all things. The materialists, on the other hand, believed that matter was the ultimate reality and that there was no life after death.
