Varna is a four-fold division of Hindu society based on occupation, with Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants), and Shudras (workers) being the main divisions. Jati, on the other hand, refers to the hundreds of endogamous castes that developed over time within these varnas. Both were based on the idea of a rigid social hierarchy where one's status was determined by birth and occupation. Inter-caste marriages were generally discouraged.
