Discuss the ways in which the Alvars, Nayanars and Virashaivas expressed critiques of the caste system.
Answer / Aditya Kumar Kushwaha
The Alvars, Nayanars, and Virashaivas were religious reformers who emerged during the Medieval period in South India. Each group had a unique approach to expressing critiques of the caste system. The Alvars, who were Tamil Vaishnavites, composed devotional poems known as Alvar hymns that challenged the orthodox Hindu Brahminical tradition and promoted universal love and equality. The Nayanars, Shaivite devotees, also expressed a similar message through their hymns, called Thevaram, which emphasized the importance of bhakti (devotion) over ritualistic performances and social status.nThe Virashaivas, founded by Basavanna, rejected the traditional caste system and championed a more egalitarian society. They promoted a doctrine known as Anubhava Mantapa, where people from all castes came together to sing hymns and participate in discussions about spirituality. This movement challenged the dominant Brahminical order and emphasized the equality of all human beings before God.
