If the difference between the Set Point and the Process Variable is directly proportional to the Controlled Output to the valve, then it is direct acting.

If both are inversely proportional then it is reverse acting valve.

Output = SP-PV ------ Reerse acting
Output = PV-SP ----- Direct acting
