What are RC and L/R time constants? What is their
significance?
Answer / Swati Goyal
RC Time Constant (τ = R*C) is a measure of how fast a circuit containing a resistor (R) and capacitor (C) will respond to changes in voltage or current. It indicates the time required for the system to reach approximately 63.2% (approximately e^(-1) = 0.37) of its final value after a step change in input.
L/R Time Constant (τ = L/R) is similar for RLC circuits, where L is inductance and R is resistance. It measures the time required for the system to decay to approximately 13.5% (approximately e^(-2) = 0.135) of its initial value after a step change in input.
