Usual megger tester once set to range already have value,
to check if the tester is OK, connect to tested equipment
the Ground probe then the other one to Earth. Reading must
be ZERO.

If this is an insulation Megger tester,short both terminal momentarily for a short duration and check it's pointer shows zero or not.If it is zero then it is o.k. otherwise not.For checking correctness of Megger reading you have to compare with standard one.
